The entire point of inclusivity is that it is not exclusive!

The entire point of inclusivity is that it is not exclusive!

Every single day I need to explain how universal, accessible design does not mean ‘only people with disabilities’ can use an accessible space… that when designed thoughtfully, accessibility increases ease of use and equity for ALL people.

Apple’s new ad (beautifully done) shows us (without turning us into inspiration porn) that adding accessibility features does not create issues for able bodied people, AND works to meet the needs of ALL users.

No matter if the space is digital or physical, making a space accessible means making it better for EVERYONE. Ableism can be sneaky… but when you are the person NOT being thought of, designed for, or accommodated? That bite gets a little closer to your butt.

Take a moment and check it out.

Disability is coming for you. Statistically, pre-covid, people in countries where the life expectancy is over 70 years of age, people will spend 8 years or 11.5% of their life living with disabilities so put yourself in someone else’s shoes. In Canada and the USA life expectancy pre-covid is 85 years.
